Making Polite Requests (Rica Etme)

In Turkish, the Geniş Zaman (Simple Present) is the standard way to ask someone to do something politely. While it looks like a question, it functions as a "Polite Command."

💡 The Formula:

Verb Stem + Geniş Zaman Suffix + Question Particle + Personal Ending (2nd Person)

  • Informal: Use mısın / misin (e.g., Opens the door?).

  • Formal: Use mısınız / misiniz (e.g., Would you please open the door?).

📋 Practical Examples:

Context

Turkish Sentence

English Translation

At a Cafe

Bir kahve getirir misin?

Could you bring a coffee?

Asking for Help

Bana yardım eder misiniz?

Would you help me?

At Home

Tuzluğu uzatır mısın?

Could you pass the salt?

Quietness

Sessiz olur musunuz?

Would you please be quiet?

Important Note on Tone:

When you ask "Pencereyi açar mısın?", you aren't asking if the person has the ability to open the window; you are asking them to actually do it. It is much softer than saying "Pencereyi aç!" (Open the window!), which can sound rude in many contexts.
